Chronic Back Pain Spurs Architect to Design Multi-use Articulating Air Mattress

Architecture school taught me to design but also gave me lower back pain due to too many countless hours/days crunched over a large drafting table designing my little heart out. I did not take long as I clearly remember in my second year having to sleep flat on my back with my legs crossed in the air to get my back as flat as possible due to chronic lower back pain.

It would be many years later if I would get even and design/develop a comfort system to help me relieve my lower back pain. One night in 2002, it was already 3 a.m. and I could not sleep due to my back pain so I got out of bed and took out my portable drafting table and got to work designing a solution. Air bed mattresses are now used extensively as the core for most hospital beds and low-loss air mattresses are crucial in the fight against decubitis (bed sores). The hospital bed is indispensable since it is adjustable many comfort positions.

There are countless air bed manufacturers but they are basically making ‘air bags’. Instead of ‘air bags’ I opted to help my chronic lower back pain by somehow replicating the articulation of the hospital bed. As luck would have it, I also suffered (still do) from acid reflux plus restless leg syndrome. Though I originally set out to design something to help my lower back pain, the final product blessed me by also greatly alleviating the acid reflux and restless leg syndrome.

Though the end product has no semblance to what I started off with, the elevated and inclined upper-body air module cured/relieved my chronic lower back pain and acid reflux. The independent lower-body air module relieved the restless leg syndrome because it can be partially inflated which gives you the feeling of resting your legs on a very soft pillow.

One of the blessings of inventing is that one may have an ‘idea’ of what one thinks is the product solution to a problem but one never knows what will finally emerge in the end as the mind is very powerful in creating solutions to problems. This is particularly true since I hired a published medical products developer to help me develop the very best and inexpensive solution to my lower back pain.
