Leadership skills training is always a hot topic and you are likely to find a new book on the subject if you frequent a local bookstore. You will find this topic is a hot button with senior leaders in almost any industry and more recently has even become a priority area with Not for profit organizations. This makes one wonder why this topic is so important to so many people? The simple answer is that leadership determines the long term viability of an entity. An organization or person will succeed to the degree that their leadership capabilities are refined so they produce dynamic results for themselves and their organizations. This leads to the obvious question, How do you improve your leadership skill set? Follow these 8 steps to up your odds of achieving your business or personal ambitions.
First, identify and copy the habits of successful leaders. You are probably not too far away from someone that is a great role model for you to imitate. Look around your work at the managers that are constantly getting promoted. Which departments consistently exceeds their goals? Are you an athlete or scholar? Think back to if you were involved in any kind of athletic or academic competition. Who really stood out and why? Think about this and you will begin to see they all have one thing in common. They have great habits. You can not copy them but you can copy their habits and get better results than you are getting right now.
Step Two is to concentrate on weekly improvement. How do you accomplish this task? By doing a personal accountability session where you objectively evaluate your leadership and performance. This requires courage and maturity to submit yourself to a brutal unbiased assessment of yourself. It will not be easy but improving your leadership talents so you can get better results is worth every bit of the pain you may initially experience. It will be worth it if you work from a realistic baseline to judge your weekly performance. Think about how much better of a leader you will have the chance to become if you apply a rigorous approach to evaluating your leadership capacity.
A third idea is to identify your individual leadership strengths and pursue improving those natural talents first. Strengths are often easy to overlook because you just use them without much effort. You should take some time to assess your natural aptitudes and constantly look for tasks that will challenge you to increase your capacity to become stronger with those capabilities.
The fourth idea is to maintain a leadership journal to catalog your personal path toward better leadership. If you take time each day to document your discoveries it brings a constant focus to that area. This is what a leadership journal will do for you. This means you will have to work on your leadership abilities daily and this will create a burning desire that keeps you on the path to maximizing your leadership capacity.
Fifth, learn how to motivate others towards improving their own leadership talents. If you help others become better leaders something happens to your own leadership effectiveness. Pick one person you want to help and then look for opportunities to help them.
Step Six is to remember that developing your leadership skill set takes a life time commitment. It will mean going through an ongoing learning process. This is not a big deal because great achievements do not come without a price. Look at Rome and remember that it did not become powerful in one day but over time became the number one empire in the world. You will not transform into some outstanding leader overnight either. Remember that each baby step forward is a step towards greatness. You will be moving incrementally towards become a better leader and in the long term will get better and better.
Seventh, learn from your own leadership mistakes. The best leaders you read about did not have all the answers. They made lots of mistakes and learned from them. This is what made them become great in the future. Use mistakes as learning opportunities to grow.
Eighth, work on your communication and ability to persuade others. This is the heart of leadership. Remember that leadership involve communicating and selling an idea or vision until a goal is realized.
