Portrait photos are remarkably beautiful because they are able to convey emotions and feelings that can enchant any viewer. Being able to capture high quality portrait photos is an art itself as it takes years to master. Listed below are guidelines on how to take portrait photos:

Choose the Right Background - The most important part of any portrait photo is the face. Choosing the right background will allow viewers to focus only on the subjects face and not on the background.

A neutral background with a soft but solid color is ideal for this kind of shot as it does not attract any attention. Try to avoid having people or any moving objects on the background.

Blur the Background - Most professional photographers use this technique to put more emphasis on the subject instead of the background.

This technique is accomplished with the use of zoom lens while shooting from a short distance or it can also be accomplished with a wide aperture manual setting. In any case, if you have a camera that does not have this feature, you can always edit the image on your computer using image editing software.

Focus on the Eye - The center of a good portrait photo will always be the subject's eyes. This is done because eyes are capable of conveying messages. If capturing your subject, whether from the front or sideways, always be certain that you subject is looking straight into the camera.

Use Natural Lighting - this is important if capturing portrait photos because natural light allows you to capture the full color and warmth of the skin.

If you are shooting outdoors during the day, be certain to never capture an image with the sun behind your subject. If there are any shades on the face, use a soft fill-in flash to remove them. If you are shooting indoors and using artificial lighting, be certain to use indirect light sources only because direct light will distort the natural colors.

Take many Shots and Experiment - taking shots in digital photography costs nil so it is advisable to take as many shots as possible and experiment with different settings to learn and achieve what you are on the look out for. Try to take into consideration the lighting, subject position in addition to the balancing of temperatures, exposures, and depth of field.
