This kind of cancer is related to a malignant abnormal mass of tissue which is located in the pancreas. Unfortunately, estimates predict that in the United States alone more than forty-three thousand people will be affected by this particular condition and over thirty-six thousand will die with the disease before the end of 2010. It is difficult to diagnose because pancreatic cancer symptoms often do not present until the disease is in the advanced stages.
The pancreas has two major roles, it regulates the way in which sugar is processed and it assists the digestive system. It provides the necessary digestive juices needed for the digestion of food. Cells located inside that should die in their normal life cycle will continue to live, mutate and accumulate which will cause the tumor leading to cancer.
There are two different types of cells located within this organ and two different types of cancer are possible. One cell is responsible for hormone production while the other supplies juices for digestion. Each kind of cell can be associated with its own form of cancer.
Lining the ducts of the pancreas are the cells that are responsible for digestive juices. Adenocarcinomas are most often linked with this kind of cell. A group of this kind of cells may also be called an exocrine tumor.
Hormone producing cells located here are responsible for the production of insulin. If these cells become involved it is known as a form of endocrine cancer. Fortunately, this type is extremely rare and only affects a very small percent of the population; under one percent.
This cancer is known as the silent killer because its symptoms are often hidden until the disease is at a serious point. There are symptoms associated with the disease like no appetite, weight loss, depression, pain in the upper portion of the abdomen continuing through the back, blood clots and yellowing around the whites of the eyes and skin.
Although these symptoms may also be related to other conditions, they are serious enough to see a physician. Testing will be done to determine the proper diagnosis. If cancer is present then the physician will assign it a stage and begin necessary treatment.
Stages are categorized by the degree of seriousness with four being the most serious. One indicates its presence inside the organ. Two indicates presence and possible spread to nearby tissues and organs with a possibility of lymph nodes. Three is an indication that major blood vessels have been involved with the possibility of lymph nodes. Four means it has spread to other organs in the body.
Surgery will most likely be the course of treatment if cancer has remained only in the pancreas if the diagnosis is delivered. Unfortunately, if it has spread to other areas then this may not be an option and medication may be the only form of treatment. The patient will be provided with medications to keep them comfortable while dealing with the symptoms. There is no specific way to avoid pancreatic cancer, but there are ways to assist in the prevention including avoiding smoking, keeping weight under control and exercising.
A particular group of individuals are more susceptible to this particular form of cancer. Those over sixty are at high risk, as are those who have diabetes or a family history of the disease. Individuals in these groups should not dismiss pancreatic cancer symptoms.
