Lightweight wheelchairs typically weigh less than 30 lbs and if flat packed they can be small. If you travel to the doctors or maybe shopping or maybe just going on holiday then these wheelchairs are great as can fold to a very small size. Lightweight wheelchairs are designed for safety and durability and are technically more advanced.
Some features of typical folding lightweight wheelchairs
The set up of a lightweight wheelchair consists of a steel frame which will typically weigh in the region of 13 lbs and come with a nicely upholstered padded seat and arm rest. The arm rests are folding down to the seat before folding the whole chair. Other types of lightweight wheelchairs are the same are rigid version of this one.
Elderly Users prefer Lightweight wheelchairs
A Lightweight folding wheelchair is actually more geared towards older users who require the ease to fold design. The wheelchair is not designed for the user to fold up, but actually from the assistant to do.
A big disadvantage of lightweight folding wheelchairs is there lack of flexibility to be costumed to the users need and size, as they need to fold they have little adjustment so not to affect the folding movement. Compared to rigid wheelchairs that don't need to fold and hence can be adjusted to suit the person's needs.
Due to the fixed design a lightweight wheelchairs aren't always the most comfortable wheelchair to sit in. But as the main selling point is the quick folding ability and store in the trunk of a car makes it popular among older users who are not travelling too often.
Maintenance and Care
A typical lightweight folding wheelchair will require more maintenance than other types of wheelchairs. Due to the lightweight frame they are typically weaker and can crack and the front forks can bend easily which will make folding difficult.
Maintenance is important and if your chair is not used much it should be stored in the house as if it gets wet over a long run it will become rusty which will cause issues if folding in future. Last thing you want is if you need your wheelchair is its rusty and will not open or close.
Good thing about lightweight folding wheelchairs is that people who don't normally use wheelchairs can use them as normal wheelchairs sand get on with there life.
