No matter how much we practice safety there will always be accidents on the job. It’s not anyone fault–accidents just happen. Sometime you can tell if you’re injured right away and every so often the injury can show up later. So even if you don’t appear injured you should report it, just to be on the safe side. There are things that you should do if you have had an accident at work.

Most firms have workers compensation but there is a time limit involved if you are injured on the job. Reporting it right away, whether you are oblivious hurt or not will prevent someone else being injured in the future by the same accident. It may also cause your employer to implement new safety measures. You should see a doctor right away or if your company has an on call doctor or nurse you should see them soon after the accident. If you are seriously injured you should go to the emergency room. Check with you employer to see how they want you to proceed.

It may be their insurance requires you to go to the emergency room or to see a doctor of their choice. It’s your firms responsible to file a worker’s compensation report if your accident causes you to miss work for any length of time. You should do a follow up to be certain the claim has been filed. Remember there are instances where your employer’s insurance may not cover your injuries. For instance, if you were using illegal drugs or even doctor approved drugs or if you were intoxicated if you had the accident.

Most accidents at work are covered by worker compensation but that doesn’t mean your employer is responsible for your accident. The law states that you can’t sue them unless you can prove they were gross negligent that caused your injury. It can get very messy and expensive. Sometimes accidents just happen.
