First Reports on Acai Berry Research

You've likely read much about this superfruit already. There have been countless diets advertised, celebrities and billionaire media moguls have sworn how great it works, and there are of course ads upon ads trying to convince you that acai is the best thing since moms apple pie. But the clinical facts from the acai berry research paint their own picture, free from hype. To begin with, we know that the acai berry comes from a palm tree that grows mainly in South America. Brazil is the primary country where the acai berry is grown and processed.

There are so many different reports, almost all claiming something different on what the antioxidant value of the acai berry is. One report states that it is lower in antioxidants than the list of fruits already on the high-antioxidant value list. Another report denies this fact and says it is equivalent or higher in value than the fruits on this list. Actual product marketing naturally shows it to be much higher still.

Fruits are always healthier, with many more nutrients in them, if eaten fresh. In any case, since the acai berry grows very far away and in climates that are not present in the United States, getting it in this form is impossible for Americans. So the Brasilian producers have found ways to freeze-dry it and powder it, but the people who are manufacturing it this way are destroying some of the nutritional value by adding to it. They are trying to give it a longer shelf life by adding ingredients to preserve it. They are trying to stretch it for bigger profits by adding ingredients to bulk it up.

Since the acai berry is native to tropical countries, and there is no where in the United States that is suitable for its growth, the United States' Department of Agriculture, (FDA) is not going to approve it or deny it, or do any tests on it is nutritional value at this time. The approval and manufacturing laws of this product lies in the hands of the Brazilian government for now, obscuring an unknown amount of facts about acai.

A professor at the University of Florida has recently done a study on the effects of acai on leukemia. His results show that it caused 81% of the leukemia cells to self destruct in his test tubes. Some researchers are even claiming that their studies are showing that acai may very well be a super drug that will cure almost any ailment or disease... Repeating their results in other labs is the hard part, of course.

Recently there was release made by the FDA authorizing all product manufactures to report and market that the plant sterols in their product are effective in the prevention of heart disease. Many laboratories claim that in their acai berry research, they clearly see that acai is very high in plant sterols, and to date, no one has disagreed with this finding.
