The government says they employ 11,028,000 collecting pay checks. This includes contractor jobs, Federal civil servants, grantee jobs, uniformed military personnel and postal jobs. What it does not include are those unemployed, those collecting public assistance and social security payment checks. In essence, these people are on the payroll in addition to local and state hourly workers, state police and cops, public school teachers, emergency workers and firemen, librarians, road department employees and state legislature workers. The burden of employing this huge infrastructure is supported by taxpayers personalized checks.
All evidence shows that reducing taxes, regulations, reducing the size of government creates more jobs in the long run. Most reputable studies have shown that Government spending below 25% of GDP spurs economic growth. The only sane way to rescue a business or household that is in trouble is to cut back on unnecessary expenses and become more productive.
Much of the increase in government has taken place in the last 50 years. The free spending checks initiated by president Wilson, who ramped up and empowered the executive branch of governments authority, has been the hallmark of successive presidents since. FDR's personalized heavy hand is not exclusive to him alone; all have led to ever increasing size of government.
In 1900 the federal government consumed less than 5 percent of total output. In 1950 the federal government consumed roughly15 percent of total output. In 1999 the federal government consumed roughly19 percent of total output. Today it is out of control. Government employment is outpacing manufacturing employment and many feel it is mushrooming too big to sustain itself.
Gigantic government size has resulted in a one party type government all in favor of expanded power and regulation. Decisions are being taken away by regulation and both political parties have turned away from any policy change for cutting the size or scope of government. People feel helpless to challenge the direction since policy decisions never make it to the ballot and most politicians betray their campaign promises.
Most non-government taxpayers have to work 45 years before they are eligible for retirement. Not so for the government unionized workers. 20 years and they are out with pensions, annuities and princely perks. Some might argue that the police and military have dangerous jobs and deserve early retirement. Put in perspective, these jobs are not as dangerous as those of iron workers, construction workers, forest industry workers, fishermen etc. Generally without job security, non-government workers continued employment is based on their everyday effort in relation for the demand for the product they are creating and retirement usually comes only after 65 years of age. Secure Federal and State public workers, on the other hand, appear as taking unfair advantage of the common man who is forced to pay for their hefty compensation.
Unemployment numbers tell a story that is not what is seems. For instance, March 2009 unemployment reached 13.2 million but if looking at how government arrives at that figure, you find it is actually much larger. Those no longer receive unemployment benefits or are no longer on the look out for work for more than a year so a unemployment figure reaching the 20% range. This is known as the unofficial U-6 data.
What have we learned? Not all facts provide by government are helpful and some are massaged. It is easy to lose sight of the big picture if looking at numbers alone. Those unemployed are essentially getting a paycheck from the government and need to be counted into the total size of government if estimating the size of government in addition to everyone who draws a government sponsored check. The mere fact that those unemployed are getting a paycheck for a period of time should be stimulus enough for a liberal mindset.
"I consider the people who constitute a society or a nation as the source of all authority in that nation." wrote Thomas Jefferson. If that is the case, the government supposed to work for me. They answer to me. If do I get to vote for the size of government on the ballot? Editorial supplied by Personalized Checks
